Review

I loved this multi-awarded book and needs a 10-star rating but 5-stars is the highest and beyond deserving and its gifting continuing legacy. The editors recognize Braiding Sweetgrass for the 2022 Your Voice Your Review award. It’s not just Kimmerer’s most beautiful voice that will resonate for all time, it’s also her otherworldly command of storytelling, and much more. You are with her stepping across the land where the sacred plants talk if you know what to listen for. Where your spirit is changed forever by power from slabs striated slabs of rock, colors telling a story going back far in the past that mutter and mumble. As well as center one’s mind.

It’s overwhelming as the fragility and strength of the land has been sustained only by the untold power of the Dakota people. Handing down traditions for thousands of years, they never lost to this day deep knowledge critical to our survival. Accessing and dispensing her encyclopedic-like knowledge of plants as easy as sipping fresh spring water, she describes in loving detail a world you didn’t know existed. The grandeur of the wild spaces support the amazing story all by itself. It’s also about a people knowledgeable without peer, but, the species she loves like family, inseparable from her being with the plants having an important story to tell.

It’s such as complex intricate world and fascinating read, it is the rare book that is mind blowing. And a call, hope and plea for mankind to not destroy what’s left. She teaches us that it’s the plants that are calling out to us. To pay attention, to listen. To sustain them as they have sustained us. A savant, she knows seeds, growing food in three-dimensions instead of in rows, and everything about every species.

The Dakota’s advanced practices and generosity prevented colonists from starvation but for their keen botany skills perfected over millennia as well as their naturalist gardening techniques. Dakota, like many other Tribal knowledge, they had all archived mentally. Sacred knowledge and spirituality preserved. So that culture remains healthy and alive.

Start with a clear mind, have respect for life, and Mother Earth will respect you back—if one has a healthy relationship with the natural world, instead of the worse instincts of the most ignorant: dominance and destroying as easily as striking a match. The circular system of abundance by cultivating while replenishing the land is alive and well today but industry encroachments and development threaten the water and spoiling the land. As it has fought the battle continuously and historically, they will never give up. Their stewardship and guardianship is why it still exists, but never before have so many things conspired against the land as now.

The author’s ingrained love of the land. A botanist beyond compare. One woman with the courage and brainpower of any hundred (or more) men. Now is the time for those wishing to do something.
