This Is What It Sounds Like, What the Music You Love Says About You
Summary
Review
From a listeners point of view, Dr. Rodgers was immensely qualified to be a fan when she young, listening not just hearing. Combined with her engineering savant studio and road skills prowess, she was the best there was.
She was in the room, she was there with every major star and recounts the amazing, off-the-wall, weird, glamorous, and genius that was Prince at his peak and other acts! Then she goes about breaking down the psychoacoustics effects music has on the mind and how music works on us and how and why it works biologically and psychologically. Then goes about breaking down how music is made.
Then there’s the behind the scenes stuff. Rogers is a genre groundbreaking pioneer making the science of hearing fabulous and interesting combined with her journey to the top of the music business describing how and why it all works on our minds.
Her encounters and stories of who she met, the greatest stars during the golden age pre-rap music are incredible but the book, fittingly, has a back-beat and through-line that explains and evokes the rhythms and masters of the time. She is not only the person in the studio but the 24/7 life that took over, and what a wild one it was. Check out her site to learn from her through select audio files demonstrating style, structure and nuances it takes to understand what music is.
When she walked away from an extremely lucrative career she had much more to accomplish. She was pre-wired to be both a microphone and speaker and a one-woman power source. To then fulfill another dream of receiving her doctorate of acoustical science is another amazing accomplishment. Not only wire a room for sound, a record producer, tour sound manager but an articulate witness and writer (with Ogi Ogas) combining the most unlikely of multi-disciplines taking her original fandom to a level never reached before by anyone. And what an unlikely set of events that set it all in motion.
And now an important book in foundational rhythms, electronica, beats, and history of World Music that laid the groundwork of an era when the mysterious personal lives of the great artists of generations come to life and how it all happened.
Really as colorful as the cover!
